First day started late, got my cool bag and the staff at the frount were really helpful. Missed the first 2 talks :-(
My first talk was on Django with Simon Willison which was cool to see another CMS in action. Then after lunch, Cal Henderson talked about Flickr and his experiences of building large websites and the importance of committing and testing all the time. One of the more magical things about Flickr is that it has a magic pixie that does all its work for uploading new changes. Maybe every site needs a magic pixie to do all their work? :-)
Kelly Goto gave an inspiring talk on "Getting unstuck". It was definitely food for thought!! Michael Lopp - Primal software development was a good talk and I saw a lot of similarities to workmates and the work place in general but it was more orientated to a start ups and who you should hire and run your business etc.
Jason Santa Maria talk on "Good design aint easy" was really cool and made me think a lot about how as a developer, I can tell stories with my design! It took me back to my favorite book as a child called "Pano the Train" and how I wanted my mum to read it over and over again. I guess this is how we should be creating.
The fireside chat with Rowan Simpson and Sam Morgan was cool. It was just a relaxed chat and talked about what happened with TradeMe from the early days until now! It was hilarious to hear that one day when they were just starting out, a couple of the techies decided to take one of the servers apart for a few hours, to the shock of one of the shareholders... PowerPoint Karaoke Idol = very random and I thought a bit biased at the end as Nat took the crown from a large applause from a mainly kiwi crowd, although Michael Lopp and Damian Conway put up a good fight! congrats. Then off to cocktails in the west wing, a great day all round!
